Alpe D’Huzes/ KWF fund

Together accelerating cancer research

The collaboration between Alpe d’HuZes, KWF Dutch Cancer Society and Oncode Institute brings public engagement and science closer together. Through an investment of €4.5 million in the Alpe d’HuZes/KWF Fund, innovative cancer research within Oncode is given the opportunity to move forward faster.

This funding makes it possible to directly support promising ideas and accelerate research towards applications that matter to patients.

A fund driven by public engagement

Alpe d’HuZes has grown into one of the most remarkable cancer initiatives in the Netherlands. Every year, thousands of participants come together in a collective effort to raise funds for research for cancer. Since 2006, this has resulted in more than €245 million in donations.

Through the fund with Alpe d'HuZes/ KWF, these contributions are carefully invested in scientific research. Within Oncode Institute, this support is directed towards innovative research that can contribute to better understanding, earlier detection and more effective treatment of cancer.

What defines this collaboration is the direct connection between societal engagement and scientific progress.

Creating room for speed and new ideas

Oncode Institute’s research model is built around speed and collaboration. Researchers are able to start quickly, without lengthy preparation phases, and work closely across institutional boundaries.

This approach creates space to explore new research directions as opportunities emerge. It also enables ideas with higher risk, but potentially major impact, to move forward.

Researchers are selected based on their scientific track record and the quality of their proposals. The goal remains the same: to accelerate insights and translate them into concrete steps towards clinical application.

Oncode Institute: Synergy Call

An important part of this collaboration is the Oncode Synergy Call, made possible through the Alpe d’HuZes/KWF Fund. The call was created to actively stimulate collaboration between research groups.

From 1 July onwards, these research teams will start working on their joint projects. Each collaboration brings together different areas of expertise with the aim of accelerating new insights and overcoming barriers in cancer research.

Collaboration as a driver of breakthroughs

Many of today’s challenges in cancer research are complex and require multiple perspectives. By actively bringing researchers together, new ideas and solutions emerge that are less likely to arise within isolated projects.

The Synergy Call is designed to facilitate this cross-disciplinary collaboration. Not as a goal in itself, but as a way to strengthen and accelerate research.

The selected projects demonstrate that collaboration not only leads to new ideas, but also to more concrete steps towards application.

From idea to application

With the launch of the ten Synergy projects, a new phase begins within this collaboration. In the coming years, these projects will contribute to a deeper understanding of cancer and to the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

The support of Alpe d’HuZes and KWF makes it possible to move faster from early ideas to applicable knowledge. In doing so, the distance between research and patients becomes smaller step by step.

press news

The Alpe d’HuZes/KWF Fund will invest €4.5 million in Oncode Institute over the next two years. Made possible by the participants of Alpe d’HuZes, this funding accelerates innovative cancer research and enables promising ideas to more quickly develop into applications for patients. The investment supports multiple innovative research projects and aligns with the Alpe d’HuZes research themes: understanding, detection, and cure.

Every year, hundreds of participants cycle up Alpe d’Huez to raise funds for cancer research.
For Oncode Institute, Alpe d'HuZes is more than a challenge — it’s a symbol of community, perseverance, and purpose.
